Client is an environmental technology company providing innovative products for the purification of water. Client has successfully commercializes safer, more effective, and environmentally sustainable wastewater treatment solutions. Client is also engaged in research and development efforts focused on bringing the next generation of specially engineered wastewater treatment products to market. The client was established in 2003 and is based in Massachusetts. Relocation may not be required.

Position Purpose:

To provide overall strategic and operational direction to the corporation’s technological planning and development function. Responsible for analyzing new technologies and the efforts leading to new or improved products. Work with the CEO to develop and implement long-range strategic objectives and operating policies and procedures to ensure attainment of corporate goals. Build interest in scientific community and related government agencies funding a collaborative effort to promote current product portfolio as well as develop alternative products.

Primary Responsibilities:

Reporting to the CEO, the CTO will serve as the primary technical leader of the company in addition to the terms listed below.
• Developing and disseminating body of evidence supporting the products value proposition
• Design and manage sponsored research with research partners (universities, large municipal plants, engineering firms)
• Design and implement case studies / pilots with wastewater treatment plant operators and engineers
• Publish papers and conduct technical presentations at regional, national and international industry conferences
• Support the Sales process by working with VP Sales & Marketing and other team members and distributors to develop tools that will enable clear articulation of key value proposition elements to different audiences
• Provide technical assistance and process consulting in municipal and industrial applications, and in decentralized where needed.
• Consult with technology suppliers to ensure the use of CLIENT products in their systems
• Seek opportunities for establishing new R&D programs as well as running current R&D with a focus on obtaining funding from related government agencies
• Manage an existing group of technical personnel including scientists and engineers while continuing to recruit and hire additional R&D talent
• Direct and manage overall product development plan so that new products or improved products are delivered to market on a timely basis
• Ensure that plans and policies are understood and administered by management team
• Collaborate with industry-leading engineers and large municipalities through the Water Environment Research Foundation (WERF) and other organizations and working groups.
• Be Proactive with the scientific community and Manage joint technology agreements
• Manage and drive company IP portfolio
• Assumes other special projects/assignments as directed by the CEO


Experience and Education Requirements:

• Ph.D. and P.E. designations preferred.
• Academic background in Biology, Chemistry and / or Civil and Environmental Engineering.
• 10-15 years of experience in the design and implementation of Biological Nutrient Removal systems at municipal and/or industrial wastewater treatment facilities.
• Experience building and leading a new group or division in a high growth business is highly desirable.
• Demonstrated leadership skills mentoring, team building and developing cohesive operational units working towards common goals.
• Strong project management experience and multi-tasking abilities.
