Job Details: Restoration Crewmember

Job Title Restoration Crewmember
Company Washington Conservation Corps - King County
Location Renton WA (US)
Date Posted 07/21/10
Application Deadline 09/22/10
The Washington Conservation Corps (WCC) is seeking corpsmembers for restoration crews based in King County. Our mission is to provide individuals 18-25 years of age with educational work experience while enhancing Washington’s valuable natural resources. The WCC is an AmeriCorps service program and we are looking for individuals who want to learn by doing and who want to help themselves, their community, and the environment.

The WCC is a great opportunity to gain hands-on experience in the environmental field. Corpsmembers work on a 6 person team, including a crew supervisor, to perform environmental restoration and habitat enhancement projects, including invasive species removal and planting native trees and shrubs along creeks, streams, and rivers. Some projects involve erosion prevention, installation of irrigation systems, fence building, and in-stream habitat creation. Corpsmembers work outdoors 40 hours a week constructing projects with hand labor and power tools. The work is physically demanding and the weather can be extreme, but the experiences are invaluable, the outcomes are rewarding, and the friendships are priceless.

Corpsmembers work four 10 hour days (7am-5:30pm) Monday – Thursday and meet daily at a compound in Renton located near Renton Technical College. There are 3 crews that work for King County’s Department of Natural Resources and Parks. Most crewmembers live in Seattle proper and commute with one another to work, though the facility is also accessible by the Metro bus system (Route #105). Corpsmembers receive state minimum wage ($8.55/hr) and medical benefits. Upon successful completion of the program, participants receive a $5350 education award that can be applied towards student loans or pay for tuition at most accredited schools. Additionally, current federal student loans will go into forbearance while in the WCC and the interest accrued during the year will also be paid off.

By becoming a WCC Member you will take advantage of experiences that are incredibly rewarding and that strengthen your résumé at the same time. Corps-members also receive extensive valuable training through the WCC and King County Department of Natural Resources and Parks.

Corpsmembers hired for this position will begin their AmeriCorps term on October 4, 2010 and end the term on September 22, 2011.

Qualifications:
-Must be a U.S. citizen, United States National, or lawful Permanent Resident of the United States
-Must be 18-25 years of age on date of hire
-Must be strong willed with ability to handle harsh environmental settings and strenuous working conditions
-Must be willing to work closely on a crew with diverse backgrounds and lifestyles
