Our client is transforming the fuels and chemicals industries with biological systems that can flexibly manufacture high value products from a wide range of feedstocks. They have acquired and developed a number of platform technologies which will allow us to reduce production cost with environmentally friendly technologies as an alternative to petrochemical-based manufacturing. Products envisioned include replacing of existing polymers with chemically equivalent polymers entirely derived from renewable resources; in many cases the feedstock is currently treated as waste. Their technologies allow development of standard grade fuels and chemicals to supply existing market demand in multiple multi-billion dollar markets. Position Location: Houston, TX Position Expectations: Our client requires a highly-energetic and visionary individual with extensive experience in microbial metabolism, industrial microbiology, molecular biology, metabolic engineering, and related fields to lead our Metabolic Engineering department in the development of commercially viable microbial production systems. The Director of Metabolic Engineering will report directly to the Chief Scientific Officer; managing efforts for all matters related to devising, researching, and delivering metabolic pathway engineering of microbes for the industrial scale production of chemicals from glycerol fermentation. The Director is also expected to provide vision and leadership for developing a robust platform for utilizing a variety of waste stream feedstocks and delivering value added fuels and chemicals. Position Accountabilities: • Strategize, devise, and execute lab and pilot-scale applied research for the development and commercialization of microbial production systems to convert glycerol and other waste feed streams into value added products. • Manage and lead a portfolio of internal and external R&D projects to ensure the venture has the technical capability to meet long-term product development and production goals. • Support manufacturing by directing technical development and optimization programs to produce economic successes. • Compile and deliver in conjunction with the entire organization an integrated technology transfer package to drive the transition of the company from technology development to commercial manufacturing capability. Organizational Relationships: Supervisor: Chief Scientific Officer Other Interactions: Management Team and Board Experience and Education: • Ph.D. in biochemical engineering, biological sciences, chemical engineering, or a related field and five or more years of experience in leading metabolic engineering projects and teams. • Strong background in metabolic engineering, microbial physiology, and molecular genetics, and a proven record of research innovation. • Comprehensive understanding of microbial metabolism as well as expertise in recombinant DNA technologies. • Experience in an industrial setting; working in and managing diverse teams and workgroups while prioritizing objectives in a resource constrained early stage venture environment. • Record of meeting and exceeding goals and milestones according to commercial timelines. • Sincerely passionate about developing renewable resource based fuels and chemicals.
