SUMMARY
We seek a Bioprocess Engineer who will work with a team to develop processes that convert cellulosic biomass to fuels and chemicals using conventional and proprietary organisms. This individual will be responsible for lab and personal safety, cell health and sterile handling procedure at all times.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

•Design, assemble, operate, and perform routine maintenance, and trouble-shooting of small scale batch and continuous biomass processing equipment.

•Execute research programs and experiments required to reach project goals as assigned by the small bioreactor experiments with the Laboratory Supervisor.

•Assist the process development and engineering teams as required to transfer technology from the laboratory to pilot, demonstration, and full scale process plants.

QUALIFICATIONS EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

•Ph.D. degree in Biochemical Engineering, Biotechnology, or other related field with 1 – 2 years experience in a pilot plant R&D environment

•Familiarity with laboratory procedures associated with biological process development, SIP reactors including shake flask fermentation, filtration, and analytical methods for quantification of carbohydrates, proteins, and other biomass fermentation by-products.

•Familiar will sterile techniques and experience in handling anaerobic culture

•Experience with biochemical process unit operations including pretreatment, hydrolysis, fermentation, and S/L separations.

•Effective oral and written communication skills and the ability to work in a fast-paced development setting/organization and manage supporting staff.

The ideal candidate will be a team player with other bioprocess research and process development personnel to meet organizational goals. Perform design of experiment, statistical analysis of data, regression analysis, and mass and energy balances for process development and technology transfer purposes . Have a working knowledge of process control equipment and software Plan and schedule daily technical activities in order to meet established timelines. Write SOPs. Recommend and develop new processes.

Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.

Have excellent oral and written communication and interpersonal skills. Analyze, assess, recommend, and execute process optimization programs. Have demonstrated time-management, problem-prevention, and problem-solving skills. Work with co-workers, vendors, and the public professionally and tactfully. Have operated small-scale anaerobic fermentation equipment.
