In this critical role you will act as a Department Head over the Hillsboro Wafering operation. This position is responsible for managing a high-volume, 24x7 production facility for producing wafers that will be developed into solar cells. You will be responsible for production operations, equipment maintenance, equipment engineering, process engineering and product quality in a state-of-the art solar manufacturing plant. You will exercise both management skill and leadership capabilities to meet aggressive growth targets. As a member of a growing team in a start-up environment you will work with your peers to develop core processes, practices, applications, and methodologies to enable sustained growth. Primary responsibilities for this position include: • Plan, organize, manage, and control activities related to wafer production. • Organize, supervise, and direct the work of wafer department personnel. As a department head, you will need to effectively manage through others and direct projects to effective completion across multiple functional areas including production, maintenance, equipment and process engineering and quality. • Collaborate with management to set aggressive targets, align team to targets and ensure the operational plan can achieve targets. Manage strategic alignment to company goals and ensure that day-to-day operations run smoothly to achieve goals. • Evaluate, select and train new personnel for production, maintenance, equipment engineering, process engineering, quality and other related positions within the group. • Manage employee performance utilizing performance management tools. Ensure that all departmental staff are effectively aligned to organizational performance metrics. • Interact with SolarWorld Purchasing and vendors to ensure effective supply of raw material, consumable parts and to ensure acceptable equipment performance. • Interact with internal and external customers to ensure effective wafer supply across SolarWorld's silicon value chain. In this function, you will supply both internal and external customers. You will own the P&L and be responsible for business results. • Drive continuous improvement, cost reduction and quality improvement projects. Implement industry-leading lean manufacturing practices for sustained high-volume manufacturing. • In collaboration with equipment and process engineering teams, drive cost improvements, equipment uptime improvements and process improvements for yield and productivity enhancements. • Manage budgets. • Work collaboratively with Controlling & IT to make data-driven decisions using MES and other data available from the manufacturing floor. Position Requirements This position is ideal for a candidate who is enthusiastic about being a "green collar" worker in the solar photovoltaic (PV) industry. Successful candidates should demonstrate a desire for personal development, communicate easily, enjoy working in a team environment and be highly flexible. The successful candidate will possess the following combination of education and experience: • Bachelor's degree (B.S.) in engineering, manufacturing technology or related discipline or equivalent combination of education and experience. An advanced degree in a related field (e.g., MBA, PhD) is preferred. • Advanced functional expertise in a high-tech manufacturing environment is required, as evidenced by 8+ years of related experience as a production or engineering manager or related job role. • Must possess advanced computer skills utilizing Microsoft Office productivity tools (e.g., Excel, Power Point, Word). Additional preference for detailed knowledge of ERP and MES systems for reporting, analysis and management and control of high-volume manufacturing. • Preference for detailed understanding and training in statistical analysis, lean manufacturing and problem solving methodologies and tools that are used in a high-volume manufacturing environment. • Must demonstrate effective leadership (e.g., people management) skills including team building, performance management, career development and coaching of supervisors, engineers and other individual contributor positions. • Demonstrated ability to achieve objectives by working in and with cross-functional and multi-cultural teams. • Must possess ability to manage budgets and have prior P&L ownership experience. • Preference for entrepreneurial drive and prior experience with startup companies or new business division launches. • Must possess excellent written and verbal communications skills. • Must possess a valid passport and ability to travel domestically and internationally as required.
